After Hours: Jan Van Angelopoulos & Fotis Siotas (Live)
                        Live music performance
Jan Van Angelopoulos (drums, modular synthesizer) and Fotis Siotas (violin, vocals) draw inspiration from the traditional Greek duo form known as “zygia.” In a typical zygia, as found in Greece and the Balkans, a lead solo instrument provides the melody, accompanied by percussion that sets the rhythm.
Exploring this archetypal structure, Jan & Fotis develop rhythmic and melodic elements rooted in the broader Greek musical tradition. Improvisation—an essential component of all folk music—plays a central role in their collaboration. Sonically, the blend of acoustic instruments with soundscapes drawn from pop/dance culture—effects, bass, and modular synths—enriches and reframes music with a clear point of origin, shaping a hybrid acoustic/electronic sound.
With a wide range of musical practices and artistic interests, the two collaborators meet and define a sonic space they describe as “meta-traditional music from Greece.” Within this direction, their albums “Folks Nowadays” (2023) and “VKHS” (2024) have shaped the duo’s identity and musical ethos.
The music of B.Y.S. Trio moves between folk and urban, tangible and intangible, following a path rich in suggestion and spirituality. Just as Ornette Coleman was inspired by a painting to compose the iconic piece Lonely Woman (The Shape of Jazz to Come, 1959), here too the visual experience of the space becomes a catalyst for the creation of sound, with silence serving as a foundational point of reference.
The trio’s sound is marked by density and clarity, lyricism and unrestrained freedom. It is sculpted through the dynamic of dialogue in improvisation and a shared desire for meaningful listening.

Bio
Jan Van Angelopoulos
Giannis Angelopoulos is a drummer and composer. He uses the stage name Jan Van Angelopoulos for the music he writes — an unconventional Dutch translation of his name, first adopted during his studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory (Bachelor in Music Performance, Jazz & World Music Department), from which he graduated in 2002.
In November 2010, he released his debut album “Misspent,” combining nu jazz, pop, dance, and electronica, centered on drums, vibraphone, viola, double bass, flute, and saxophone, alongside analog synthesizers. Following Misspent and several digital singles, he released “Ladokolla” (2013) on vinyl; the album “JAN VAN” (2015), with lyrics by Efthimis Filippou; “Kako Poiima” (2019), with contributions by Pavlos Pavlidis; and the LP “Streams” (2021) via Teranga Beat.
He is a regular collaborator and member of the theatre group Vasistas and has composed music for several productions by Argiro Chioti, including “AIMATA” (Onassis Stegi, 2014), “Choefore” (Athens Epidaurus Festival, 2018), “No man is an island entire of itself – five rooms | a wander” (EMST, 2020), “Frogs” (Athens Epidaurus Festival, 2021), and “Chalepas” (Onassis Stegi, 2022). He also often collaborates with the dance group Stereo Nero (“Dalga,” 2018; “Phthongika Pathi,” Athens Epidaurus Festival, 2019; “442,” Onassis Stegi, 2021).
Fotis Siotas
Fotis Siotas was born in Thessaloniki. He studied violin and voice at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki. He has been a member of multiple local bands and choirs. Since 1993, he has been active in concerts and discography as a musician, arranger, composer, and vocalist.
