The endless thread (Adults)

Weaving workshop (Adults)
The workshop “The endless thread” focuses on the timeless significance of weaving as a form of cultural identity, technical skill, and contemporary creative practice. This activity combines both theoretical and hands-on approaches, highlighting the historical dimension of weaving as well as its contemporary applications across different fields, such as fashion, design, and art.
The workshop is divided into two parts. In the theoretical part, adult participants will explore the evolution of the weaving tradition, its relationship with local communities, and its contribution to cultural heritage, with references to artefacts from the museum’s folklore collection. In the practical part, participants will use tabletop and frame looms, allowing them to understand the basic structure of weaving, thread interlacing techniques, and to create small woven samples, as well as a collective textile piece.
This activity contributes to the preservation and promotion of intangible cultural heritage by examining how weaving techniques and patterns are connected to specific communities and traditions. At the same time, it showcases the contemporary dimension of weaving, which is no longer limited to its utilitarian value but has become a medium of artistic expression and experimentation.
Through this workshop, the Vorres Museum seeks to redefine weaving as a dynamic cultural tool, offering participants a meaningful experience that bridges past and present.

Bio
Sandra Calvo Ruiz
Born in Barcelona, Spain, Sandra Calvo Ruiz is a designer, maker, and craftswoman specializing in weaving. She spent 15 years in London, where she studied Contemporary and Traditional Upholstery and Soft Furnishing at the London Metropolitan University. During her professional engagement in the field of upholstery, she developed a strong interest in textiles, which led her to the art of hand weaving. She attended courses at The Handweavers Studio and Gallery, where she was introduced to both traditional and contemporary weaving techniques.
She later moved to Crete, where she acquired her first loom and began studying and practicing traditional Cretan weaving techniques at the Lyceum Club of Greek Women in Chania. She lived on the island for seven years, deepening her knowledge of weaving and gradually developing her personal style. At the same time, she became involved in natural dyeing and handspinning, incorporating these techniques into her creative practice.
Largely self-taught, Sandra places strong emphasis on color, which serves as her primary expressive tool for conveying emotions and everyday experiences. Her work draws inspiration from the environment, textures, patterns, and colors that surround her.
As a designer and maker, she focuses on sustainability and respect for the environment, working with natural fibers, hand-operated looms, and producing zero waste throughout her process.
She currently lives and works in Athens.
